Technology Radar

A Technology Radar is a tool developed by ThoughtWorks to help organizations assess and track the adoption of various technologies. It categorizes technologies into four quadrants: Techniques, Tools, Platforms, and Languages & Frameworks. Each technology is further classified into four rings based on its maturity and adoption level: Adopt, Trial, Assess, and Hold.

Quadrants

  1. Techniques: Practices and methodologies for software development.
  2. Tools: Software applications and utilities that support development.
  3. Platforms: Foundational systems and services.
  4. Languages & Frameworks: Programming languages and frameworks.

Rings

  1. Adopt: Proven and recommended for use.
  2. Trial: Worth pursuing and evaluating.
  3. Assess: Worth exploring with caution.
  4. Hold: Not recommended for new projects.

Driving Platform Engineering Roadmap

A Technology Radar can drive the platform engineering roadmap by:

  • Identifying Trends: Highlighting emerging technologies and practices.
  • Prioritizing Investments: Focusing on technologies in the Adopt and Trial rings.
  • Risk Management: Avoiding or phasing out technologies in the Hold ring.
  • Strategic Planning: Aligning technology choices with business goals.

By regularly updating the Technology Radar, platform engineering teams can ensure they are leveraging the most effective and innovative technologies, ultimately leading to more robust and scalable platforms.
